While often used interchangeably, JFIF and JPG aren't exactly the same thing. Understanding their relationship clarifies a common point of confusion in image file formats.

What is JPG?

JPG, or JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), is a widely used image compression format known for its ability to significantly reduce file size while maintaining reasonable image quality. This makes it ideal for sharing photos online and storing large image collections. The compression technique, however, is "lossy," meaning some image data is discarded during the compression process. This results in a smaller file but may also lead to a slight degradation of image quality, particularly noticeable with sharp details and fine textures.

What is JFIF?

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a standard that defines how JPEG data is stored in a file. Think of it as a container or wrapper. It's not a compression format in itself but rather a specification for organizing the compressed JPEG data into a usable file. JFIF provides a standard structure, ensuring that different software and hardware can correctly interpret and display the JPEG image.

The Connection: JFIF and JPG Working Together

Essentially, nearly all JPG files are actually JFIF files. The JPEG compression algorithm compresses the image data, and then JFIF specifies how that compressed data is organized and stored within the file. The JFIF container ensures that the image can be readily opened and displayed by most image viewers and software applications. While technically distinct, in practical terms, the two are so closely intertwined that the terms are frequently used synonymously.
